HDTV-Howto == PVR-Howto

  • First read the various Documentation before spending your hard earned $$$
    • a simple DVD drive is $50 or less, and HDTV cards are $200-$500 range

    • Example DVD-Howto Documention

  • Pick out your small Fanless Hardware ( pending finalized measurements )
    [ FanLess system ] motherboard, CPU, memory, disks, powersupply
    • A playback system probably can be fanless ... but ..
    • I'd strongly recommend having fans on the disks for better disk lifespan

    • Encoding *.mpg will require more CPU horsepower than simple playback system

  • Download and install the latest linux kernel
    • Configure your sound cards
    • Configure your video capture cards
    • Configure your 60" plasma display -- possible dual-head X11 system

  • Download and install the latest mpeg players and libs
    • different players require different set of required libraries

  • Configure your System to be able to play movies and music
    • Practice making a DVD player before attempting a HDTV recorder/player
    • Practice playing these movie trailors

  • Watch your DVD movies on your Large 60" Plasma LCD Screen

  • Finally, order your HDTV PCI card and various accessories and HDTV subscriptions
    • HDTV programming comes from cable, satellite or over-the-air-antenna
    • Your HDTV card will require some hdtv device drivers
    • You will be recording the incoming HDTV programming to your local hard disk to be viewed later at your convenience
